verbs followed by bare infinitive AND other cases to pay attention to
1. modals are followed by the bare infinitive
I might go to the meeting, but I can't stay long.
2. make and let are followed by the bare infinitive
The teacher made us do the exercise again.
My boss let me go home early, because I wasn't feeling well.
NOTE: the passive form of this structure is passive make/let + full infinitive)
We were made to do the exercise again.
3. I'd rather; you'd better are followed by the bare infinitive
I'd better go now, or I'll be late.
4. Verbs of the senses see, hear, feel can be followed by either the gerund or the bare infinitive. However, there is a slight difference in meaning.
I heard her sing a lovely song. (I heard the whole song)
I heard her singing a lovely song. (I heard a part of it)
He saw the book fall off the shelf. The he picked it up.
He saw the book falling off the shelf and caught it.

He insisted on coming with us.
I succeeded in finishing my thesis on time.
